Microsoft is already working on the next feature update for Windows 10, and according to the company’s typical release calendar, it’s likely to be finalized in the first months of the year and then shipped to everyone in May or April.

While specifics aren’t available right now, information published by a Microsoft Edge developer seems to suggest that the Redmond-based software giant could push back the release for a little while.

As spotted by WL, the next Windows 10 feature update could land in June 2021, though for the time being, no confirmation in this regard is available.

In theory, the timing isn’t necessarily surprising, especially because this is just a small update that’s not supposed to bring major improvements. The focus would be on under the hood refinements, as the purpose isn’t necessarily to introduce new features but to polish the experience with the operating system.

Major feature update in the fall

While Windows 10 20H2 could thus launch in June, Microsoft is also expected to release a new big feature update in the fall, this time with the focus to be on new features and interface improvements.

According to Microsoft’s typical release schedule, the spring release was mostly used for major feature updates, but the company is embracing a different approach this time because of the introduction of Windows 10X, the operating system supposed to power Microsoft’s next-generation single- and dual-screen device experience.

Beginning with this release, the spring release is likely to be used for smaller updates, whereas the fall update would introduce bigger changes, including new capabilities, with the spring pack of improvements to focus on under the hood optimizations.

Windows 10X will first run on single-screen devices, with dual-screen computers to go live next year.
