Microsoft getting ready for a new Patch Tuesday cycle

Microsoft will release new Windows 10 cumulative updates later today as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle.

As usual, all Windows 10 versions will get such updates, albeit as far as consumer devices are concerned, only the latest releases are supported.

Worth noting is that Windows 10 version 2004 is also getting a new cumulative update, as its gradual rollout advances. Microsoft hasn’t yet announced general availability for this particular OS version, but if everything goes according to the plan, it should be reached rather sooner than later.

Windows 10 version 2004, or May 2020 Update, is the most recent version of the operating system. Its rollout started in late May and takes place in stages, with devices across the world getting it on Windows Update gradually.

New updates with the focus on security improvements

The new cumulative updates will include all the improvements that Microsoft previously tested as part of the preview updates shipped last week for Windows 10 version 1903 and 2004. However, additional security fixes will also be included, as this is the purpose of Patch Tuesday in the first place – to address security vulnerabilities in the OS and the pre-loaded apps and components.

In other words, expect new security fixes for Windows 10, the Windows kernel, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer, the Scripting engine and the typical components that get patched every month.

As it happens every time, the updates will go live on Windows Update as automatic downloads for everybody, but will also be published on the Microsoft Update Catalog. Of course, the updates will also be offered via WSUS.

The rollout will kick off in a few hours, and more information, including a closer look at the change of each update, will be published when the patches go live.
