Microsoft to release a new set of updates on Patch Tuesday

Microsoft is projected to release a new set of cumulative updates for Windows 10 users as part of the company’s monthly Patch Tuesday cycle.

Since it’s Patch Tuesday, the focus will be o resolving security issues in Windows 10 and the included components, but as it typically happens when such cumulative updates are released, other bug fixes will also be offered.

While it’s difficult to anticipate all the security fixes that Microsoft will include in these updates, some of the non-security improvements have already been tested as part of the Windows Insider program. For example, today’s cumulative update for Windows 10 version 2004 is likely to resolve a bug causing a “No Internet connection” message for the network icon in the system tray despite the Internet connection actually working correctly.

This fix is already available for members of the Windows Insider program.

Pausing updates

All Windows 10 versions are getting cumulative updates as part of the August 11 Patch Tuesday, but consumers running Home and Pro are recommended to always be on the latest release.

Right now, Windows 10 version 2004, or May 2020 Update, is the most recent feature update for the operating system, Microsoft is shipping this one in stages in order to detect bugs early and prevent them from hitting a bigger number of devices. You can manually check for updates to see if version 2004 is ready for your computer.

Some users might want to delay the installation of the new cumulative updates due to the likelihood of issues, as these patches have previously caused problems like failed installs and broken Windows features. To do this, it’s enough to just hit the pause button in Windows Update to delay the installation for a week.

The official rollout of the August 11 Patch Tuesday updates will begin later today with security updates to also be released for Windows 8.1 (Windows 7 will only be serviced for devices receiving extended security updates).
