Nintendo achieved the best quarterly earnings since 2008 thanks to the Switch, but the Japanese company must up its game if it wants to keep the pace. Obviously, that involves launching a new gaming platform that could compete with the next-generation consoles launched recently by Sony and Microsoft.

Although the Japanese company didn't confirm any major announcements regarding a new Switch console that didn't stop the inside leaks from revealing some of Nintendo's plans. A new report by Bloomberg has new information about the new Switch console that will most likely make a lot of Nintendo fans happy.

According to the report, the upcoming Nintendo Switch console will feature a 7-inch OLED display with 720p resolution, a serious upgrade from the current model that sports a 6.2-inch LCD panel. Another important upgrade is 4K support when connected to a TV, as opposed to just 1080p resolution offered by the current generation Nintendo Switch.

We're hopeful that Nintendo will also work a bit more on console's controllers, the so-called Joy-Cons, which suffer from the infamous “drift issue” that cause the analog sticks to randomly move characters around on the screen when they're not being physically moved by the player.

The OLED panel will be provided by Samsung, which will start production of displays for the new Switch gaming platform as early as June with an initial monthly target of just under million units. The first displays manufactured by Samsung will be sent to assemblers sometime in July, people familiar with Nintendo's plans claim.

Even though many fans have been expecting Nintendo's next Switch to include an OLED panel, the company's President Shuntaro Furukawa said in February that Nintendo doesn't plan to announce a new console “anytime soon.”

However, if the report proves to be accurate, we might have a new Nintendo Switch announcement in the second half of the year. If stars align, people will be able to purchase the new and improved Nintendo Switch during the holiday season.
