Microsoft working with AMD on new Surface model

While Intel is Microsoft’s long-time partner, the software giant is more and more interested in using AMD hardware on its new products.

And after launching an AMD-powered Surface Laptop 3, Microsoft seems very committed to bringing more AMD hardware to its customers.

A recent discovery made by hardware leaker rogame reveals what is believed to be a new Microsoft Surface model coming with an AMD Ryzen 5 4500U chip paired with an RX5300M graphics card.

Of course, very little is known at this point, but at first glance, Microsoft wants to use this hardware combo on a new Surface model that could see daylight in the coming months.

So what is this mysterious Surface model?

Hard to say, but with the Surface Book 3 just around the corner, many believe Microsoft plans to release an AMD version of 2-in-1 device as well. The Surface Book 3 is expected to see daylight in the spring, although due to the existing coronavirus outbreak, the software giant could very well push the announcement back to the fall.

Surface Laptop 4

If the Surface Book 3 isn’t the one getting AMD’s touch, then there’s a good chance that what we have here is an early prototype of the next-generation Surface Laptop.

The third-generation Surface Laptop, also referred to as the Surface Laptop 3, comes with a 15-inch version that runs on a custom Ryzen 7 chip using integrated Radeon RX Vega 11 graphics. So at least at first glance, it makes sense for Microsoft to continue working with AMD on the successor, which means that the Surface Laptop 4 could be the model to use the hardware we discovered today.

Whether or not this happens is something that remains to be seen, but for now, our only option is to just wait for more leaks, as Microsoft is a company known for keeping everything related to the Surface lineup secret before public unveilings.
