Square camera bump is now all but confirmed

We’re still several months away from the moment Apple is supposed to take the wraps off the next-generation iPhone, but leaks that have been swirling around the web lately provided us with a pretty close look at the design of the device.

And a new photo published today by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman confirms one of the worst things about the upcoming iPhone: the whole lineup will use square camera bumps, with two or three cameras on the back, depending on model.

The square camera bump is something that serial leakster @OnLeaks revealed back in January, and it evolved to become more of a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing. While some appear to love it (for whatever reason), others just think it’s hideous, including yours truly.

All in on the square camera bump

However, the more important tidbit that today’s leak reveals is that not only the iPhone XS and XS Max successors would come with the square camera bump, but all three models getting the go-ahead this year.

Previously, it was believed that this design approach would be necessary because of the upgrade to a triple-camera system on the back, but right now it looks like Apple wants to use it for a dual-camera configuration too. The 2019 iPhone XR is expected to use two cameras on the back.

The leak shows what are believed to be case moldings that manufacturers use for building accessories in advance of the iPhone launch, and they are most often created based on leaks and supply chain information. They are considered to be particularly accurate, albeit they don’t typically reveal all the small details of new iPhones in terms of design.

The camera layout on the square bump will depend on model, and while the XS and XS Plus successors will use a triangular layout, the lenses will be placed vertically on the upgraded XR.

The debut of the new iPhones is expected to take place in September, as usual, but for now, it just looks like the square bump is all but confirmed.
