No M2-powered version seems to be planned

Apple is working around the clock on upgrades for its very own custom processors, with the new M3 chip expected to see daylight later this year.

As such, the company is already making plans for what devices would get the new processor, and according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the 24-inch iMac will be one of them.

The debut of a new iMac powered by an M3 chip wouldn’t happen earlier than late 2023, Gurman says, and this is both good news and bad news.

First and foremost, it just looks like Apple is going to skip upgrading the iMac lineup with an M2 chip. At some level, this makes sense given the previous hardware refresh was launched in 2021 when the M1 chip was installed on new iMacs. Oddly enough, however, the M2 chip, which was launched with much fanfare, has already made its way to many other devices in Apple’s lineup, so it’s unusual to see the iMac being left behind this time.

However, the M3 chip is coming, and the iMac is one of the products to get the upgrade.

The processor, which could be announced in the fall, will obviously come with significant improvements in terms of performance and power efficiency, and this is why Apple is also expected to announce a new MacBook Pro running on the same chip.

In the meantime, Apple is clearly betting big on in-house chips, and the future is all about the M-lineup of processors that will power its devices. As someone who uses an M1-powered iMac every day, I can assure you that the device doesn’t feel old or slow, so at some level, skipping the M2 generation kind of makes sense.

Apple has obviously remained tight-lipped on these rumors, so take everything with a pinch of salt for now.
