Netflix accounts shared between friends and family members is something really common these days, and apparently, the company knows this very well.

And because so many people want to use Netflix, the firm wants to make the most of its account sharing option, so it may end up charging extra for people who access an account from outside of the owner’s household.

In other words, if you want to let your friends watch Netflix using your account, you could end up having to pay an extra fee.

“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans. While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households - impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members,” Netflix says.

Tests launching in several markets

The new test that will go live in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru will come with two options to allow users to add an extra member or transfer the profile to a new account.

“Members on our Standard and Premium plans will be able to add sub accounts for up to two people they don’t live with - each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password - at a lower price: 2,380 CLP in Chile, 2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru,” Netflix says.

“Members on our Basic, Standard, and Premium plans can enable people who share their account to transfer profile information either to a new account or an Extra Member sub account - keeping the viewing history, My List, and personalized recommendations.”

Of course, no final decision has been made on Netflix accounts shared worldwide, but it’s pretty clear where this is going anyway. It’s all just a matter of time now.
