Apple has reportedly developed a mid-range chip

Apple is expected to take the wraps off the next-generation iPhone in October, but at the same time, the Cupertino-based tech giant is also planning in advance and is already working on new products that could go live in 2021.

One of them is likely an iPhone SE successor, and by the looks of things, the company has already finalized the work on the chip that’s supposed to power this device.

Apple leaker Mauri QHD revealed a few days ago that Apple has developed a mid-range processor, something that’s totally new for the company, all because a new iPhone, possibly a replacement for the SE, would go live in the coming months.

“They have a midrange chip ready,” the leaker says, explaining that right now, it’s still not clear if this processor is based on the Apple A14 or the company just started working on it from scratch.

Mysterious model

We still don’t know what iPhone should get this processor, and the leaker speculates that it could be even used on the iPhone 12 Mini, which is the new device launching this year with a 5.4-inch display. This is highly likely, however, as this model will be part of the premium iPhone series.

Then, it could even power the iPhone SE3 or a potential iPhone SE 2 Plus, with the latter to essentially be a larger iPhone SE based on the iPhone 8 Plus.

It goes without saying this is just a rumor for now and everything should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism, especially because you wouldn’t normally expect Apple to build a mid-range processor. If anything, the Cupertino-based firm typically uses previous generations A chips to power its cheaper models, so it remains to be seen if the iPhone SE successor gets a completely new processor or not.
