New version of the browser now up for grabs

Mozilla has just released a new Firefox update for all supported desktop platforms.

Firefox 67.0.1 is the first minor update to version 67, and it can be downloaded right now on Windows, Linux, and macOS. The download links are embedded below.

As for what’s new in this version, it’s too early to tell, as Mozilla hasn’t yet started the automatic rollout of Firefox 67.0.1. Instead, you can manually download the update using the links below, and installing it brings the browser to version 67.0.1 in the About screen.

Because it’s just a minor update to the original Firefox 67, you should expect nothing else than bug fixes, as Mozilla typically uses these releases to introduce further refinements for the application.

As per GHacks, one potential change in Firefox 67.0.1 concerns the way downgrades of the browser are handled. As it turns out, there’s a chance that downgrading Firefox from a major version to a minor release could lead to data corruption.

Firefox 67.0.1 introduces a new compatibility check to reduce the likelihood of such an error, albeit this is something that remains to be detailed by Mozilla itself.

The full release notes for Firefox 67.0.1 aren’t yet available.

Firefox remains the only alternative to Chromium browsers

Mozilla Firefox is currently the world’s second most-used browser on the desktop, according to third-party data from NetMarketShare, with a market share that’s close to 10 percent. Google Chrome, on the other hand, is the leading option here with more than 67 percent, and the chances are that the migration of Microsoft Edge from EdgeHTML to Chromium would help consolidate the domination of this browser engine.

Firefox thus remains the only worthy alternative to Chromium-based browsers, therefore even minor updates like the ones today are important releases for its userbase.
