Feature already implemented in the Nightly build of Firefox

Mozilla is planning another great improvement for Firefox browser on Windows 10, with the application to respect the theme enabled in the operating system.

More precisely, Firefox will be able to adapt to the dark or light theme that users enabled in Windows 10, so the browser’s interface would align with the rest of the apps running on the OS.

Mozilla offered a demo of this new feature on Twitter (also embedded below), showing that the visual style in the browser would change according to the settings made in Windows 10. Custom themes won’t be altered and Firefox would retain its look in case such a visual style exists.

“Firefox Nightly now respects the Windows 10 dark/light mode setting (If you're already using a custom theme, don't worry, we won't change it),” Mozilla said.

This feature is currently enabled in the Nightly build of Firefox, and you can give it a try right now, though keep in mind that these are experimental releases that shouldn’t be used for daily use.

Possibly coming in next stable release

At this point, Firefox is the second most popular browser on the desktop after leader Google Chrome. Firefox, however, is more widely-used than Microsoft Edge, the new default browser in Windows 10 and which has been rather aggressively promoted by Microsoft itself.

There are no specifics as to when the stable build of Firefox would arrive with such features, though we expect this behavior to be promoted to the beta builds in the coming weeks. If everything works correctly with no major bug, it should be part of the next stable build.

In the meantime, Windows 10 users can change their visual themes in the operating system from the Settings app under Personalization > Colors. Toggling to the dark mode also enables the dark theme in File Explorer if a Windows 10 Redstone 5 build is installed.
