Mozilla shares more information on Flash demise

Adobe is projected to drop support for Flash once and for all later this year, and browser makers have been working to prepare for this historic moment for several years already.

Mozilla has recently announced when the final step is projected to take place, as the company plans to give up Flash entirely in its browser this year in order to keep users protected.

More specifically, Mozilla has recently revealed that Flash will be dropped completely in Firefox 84, which is scheduled to launch in December 2020. This is the version of the browser that will no longer be able to run Flash content.

At this point, Mozilla Firefox comes with Flash disabled by default, but users can manually enable the plugin if necessary. Needless to say, this isn’t recommended and is seen by many as a security concerned, but given not all sites have migrated to HTML5, it’s the only way to go for the time being.

Gradual Flash demise

In the near future, however, Mozilla will gradually continue the demise of Flash in Firefox, and the next important step is scheduled for October when the company will pull the plugin from the Nightly build of the browser.

This is something that makes total sense, as Mozilla typically makes major changes to Firefox by first bringing them to Nightly and Beta builds to make sure everything runs smoothly. Once the testing is complete in these early builds of Firefox, Mozilla promotes them to the stable channel.

Needless to say, Mozilla isn’t the only company that’s giving up on Flash and Chromium browsers are doing the same as we speak. Just like in the case of Firefox, the whole thing happens in stages, so it would still take a few more months until Flash is gone for good from all browsers.
