Microsoft focusing heavily on Android is not a new thing, but these days it really looks like the strategy is working, as most of its apps are quickly increasing their download count to set new records.

Living proof is none other than Microsoft Word, which has recently touched the 500 million Google Play Store installs milestone, becoming the most successful Microsoft app on Android.

At this point, Microsoft Word for Android has an overall rating of 4.5 stars out of a maximum of 5, with nearly 1.9 million users posting a review in the Google Play store.

500 million downloads milestone

While this performance is quite remarkable for a company that until recently was investing in its own mobile platform, it’s more important to analyze the way Microsoft Word for Android managed to reach this historic milestone.

First and foremost, it’s worth noting that the Google Play Store count only takes into account the installs that Microsoft Word received from the Store itself, and not with the stand-alone APK file that can be downloaded from other sources as well. This means that the download count could be even higher than that, though at this point it’s nearly impossible to determine it accurately.

At the same time, Microsoft Word comes pre-installed on a number of Android devices, including Samsung’s flagships. Samsung is right now the world’s number one Android phone manufacturer, and as part of a partnership with Microsoft, it is offering several apps pre-installed on its models, including the Microsoft Office suite, Skype, and others.

Needless to say, this collaboration helped Microsoft Word boost its adoption on Android, and the same thing could happen in the case of other apps that come pre-loaded on devices too.
