Microsoft and WhatsApp might be working on an official UWP flavor of the instant messaging client, and it’s believed that the project is specifically prepared for the upcoming Andromeda mobile device.

Concept photos that were published on Behance by a Microsoft designer provide us with a glimpse into how the new WhatsApp app for Windows 10 could look like, with the posting revealing that “I have been supporting the team with porting WhatsApp from Silverlight to UWP.”

In other words, this new WhatsApp app for Windows 10 could support more form factors, including mobile devices, which aren’t necessarily coming down to phones.

The mobile device category would probably include the eagerly-anticipated Andromeda as well, a project that Microsoft is believed to be working on and which could bring us a dual-screen Courier-like design that may support several form factors like laptop and tablet.

Fluent Design included

According to the Behance listing (which has already been pulled, obviously), the new Windows 10 app would be specifically built to incorporate the latest in terms of features supported by the operating system, including the highly-praised Fluent Design.

“We want them to bring their app to Windows 10 desktop and integrate unique Windows 10 features like Ink and Fluent Design. The project had [a] successful result which led to WhatsApp partnering with Microsoft, and we earned high praise from the WhatsApp team,” the alleged Microsoft designer said.

Microsoft and WhatsApp working together for a Windows 10 app isn’t entirely a new thing, as the Redmond-based software giant has previously adopted a similar strategy with other companies as well, including WhatsApp’s new parent firm Facebook. The official Facebook client for Windows 10 was designed as part of a collaboration with Microsoft, and by the looks of things, the WhatsApp UWP flavor could be a continuation of this project.

Neither Microsoft nor WhatsApp commented on news of a new Windows 10 app, but with Andromeda expected later this year, it shouldn’t take too long until we find out more on this front.
