Users recommended to remove the patches temporarily

Microsoft has recently confirmed issues with the July 2018 Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework, warning users of possible app crashes after installing the update.

The company says in an advisory that some applications may no longer work correctly or fail to start after the latest .NET Framework updates are installed.

These patches have been released to all supported Windows versions, including Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. All versions of Windows 10 are affected as well, including the April 2018 Update.

Microsoft has already pulled the updates, which means that systems where they haven’t been installed just yet are on the safe side and no further action is required. On the other hand, Microsoft recommends users to temporarily uninstall the patches as a workaround until a full fix is issued.

Microsoft: We regret the bugs

“The July 2018 Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework was released earlier this month. We have received multiple customer reports of applications that fail to start or don’t run correctly after installing the July 2018 update. These reports are specific to applications that initialize a COM component and run with restricted permissions,” Microsoft says.

“We have stopped distributing the .NET Framework July 2018 updates on Windows Update and are actively working on fixing and re-shipping this month’s updates. If you installed the July 2018 update and have not yet seen any negative behavior, we recommend that you leave your systems as-is but closely monitor them and ensure that you apply upcoming .NET Framework updates.”

Microsoft says customers who need help should contact Microsoft Support. There is no ETA just yet on a new patch, and given the nature of the caused issues, expect the company to release a fix as soon as possible and not wait until the next Patch Tuesday in mid-August.
