While the desktop version of Microsoft Edge is getting a major overhaul, with Microsoft migrating from EdgeHTML to Chromium, the mobile siblings stick with their current engines and keep receiving improvements every once in a while.

The Android version of Microsoft Edge, for example, was updated to version 42.0.2.3333 this week, and one of the most important improvements is the addition of picture-in-picture support.

This new feature allows users to watch videos while browsing the web, and beginning with this update, Edge adopters can do this on Android as well. Previously, the feature was released on iOS earlier this year.

For now, if you want to use PiP in Microsoft Edge on Android, you need to be running at least Android 8.0 Oreo on your device. Otherwise, the feature isn’t supported and an update of the mobile operating system is required – obviously, if available, as not all manufacturers shipped Oreo or Pie to their devices.

The same update introduces a bunch of other under-the-hood improvements, so overall Microsoft Edge should run a bit smoother, though many might not even notice this at first.

Edge on Android

Despite competing against Google Chrome, Samsung Internet, and other very popular Android browsers, Microsoft Edge is constantly growing on Google’s mobile operating system. The Google Play Store alone indicates that Edge has more than 5 million downloads, and the chances are the number is much higher given that many users rely on the standalone APK to try out the browser.

Needless to say, Microsoft still has a lot of work to do before making Edge a truly powerful alternative to Chrome, for instance. But for Windows 10 users who want to bring their devices in sync, Edge is certainly helpful thanks to features like Continue on PC.

You can download the latest version of the browser using the link above, but keep in mind that you must be running the latest Android releases to receive PiP.
