For now it's just called Project Scarlet

Microsoft revealed at E3 2019 the upcoming Xbox Next-Gen console code-named Project Scarlet and promises to focus more on gaming.

The current generation of consoles is coming to an end, and it looks like Microsoft’s and Sony’s efforts to prolong the lives of Xbox One and PlayStation 4, respectively, are running out of Steam. It’s time for a new generation of consoles, so everyone needs to get on board the hype train.

Of course, the E3 gaming conference is the perfect avenue to announce any kind of new console, even if it seems that fewer companies decide to participate each year. Microsoft took advantage of E3 to reveal project Scarlet and to share some details about the new console.

It’s powerful. That’s all you need to know

Despite announcing Project Scarlet, Microsoft didn’t actually share any relevant hardware details about the new console. We do know that it’s supposed to be up to four times more powerful than Xbox One X, whatever that means.

The problem with blanket statements like this one is that it’s open for interpretation, and we’ll only know for sure just how powerful the console really is one the hardware details are made available.

In any case, Project Scarlet is supposed to provide 8K support and the ability to run content at 120FPS, although it’s doubtful that these two will happen at the same time. The HDD will be replaced by an SSD, which is a much faster storage solution, and will also come with some interesting cloud capabilities.

During the presentation, Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox division, said that Microsoft learned from fans that they want something focused on gaming, and not a jack of all trades. It’s not clear how this is going to manifest, but presumably, the console won’t have stuff like Netflix or YouTube. That also seems highly unlikely.

The new Xbox is supposed to drop in 2020, during the winter holiday. It’s going to be a very long wait.
