Users are now complaining of popups on Bing search

Microsoft Edge is Redmond’s new browser for Windows and macOS, and Microsoft itself really wants users to give this application a try.

And while the company has been criticized for its aggressive push that included the automatic download on Windows 10, it looks like this hasn’t convinced the Edge team to embrace a friendlier approach.

More recently, users have come across more aggressive popups that show up when searching the web on Bing, even if they were already using Microsoft Edge.

As weird as that may sound, Microsoft Edge download prompts are displayed when searching for Chrome or Firefox on Bing even when using Edge itself. The Bing search results page now displays multiple popups to convince users to download the browser, as you can see in the image embedded below, including a questionable banner that shows up at the bottom of the screen.

“Feedback received”

While it obviously doesn’t make any sense for Microsoft to recommend users to download Edge when they’re already running the browser, parts of this aggressive push sometimes get worryingly close to an approach used by malware infections, as it’s the case of the banner mentioned above.

A Microsoft Edge engineer claims the feedback on what some have described as “harassment” has already been forwarded to the Microsoft Edge marketing team, as noted by TechDows.

“We're really sorry to hear that these notifications are compromising your browsing, especially while using Microsoft Edge! This is certainly not the experience that we're aiming to provide, and we take reports like this seriously, especially when coming from one of our long-time Insiders. We do work closely with the Marketing team, so I will pass this along to them,” the Microsoft Program Manager and Community Manager explained.

In the meantime, Microsoft Edge keeps improving, and while it’s still far from overtaking Google Chrome in global market share, it has already become the world’s number two desktop browser, partially thanks to replacing Edge legacy as the default browser on Windows 10.
