Development of the dark theme already under way

Microsoft is working on a dark mode for OneNote, and according to a report, the facelift is already in an advanced development stage and could soon be released to insiders.

The theme was discovered by AL, and according to Laura Butler, Microsoft VP of OneNote, the dark mode is currently in the process of being pushed to internal devices.

Butler also suggested that a “majorly improved navigation” system is also in the works, but no other specifics were provided.

For the time being, it looks like the OneNote dark theme follows the Windows 10 settings, which means that it won’t be possible to enable it independently from the OS visual style. In other words, if you enable the dark theme in Windows 10, OneNote automatically switches to dark as well, whereas a light Windows 10 visual style means OneNote would stick with its existing UI.

Feature currently in development

According to the aforementioned report, the OneNote settings are also tied to your Microsoft account, which means that they sync with your other devices. Once you enable the dark mode on a desktop, for example, OneNote would use the same visual style on phones too, once this update becomes available on all platforms.

Microsoft hasn’t yet offered an ETA as to when the OneNote dark theme could go live for everyone, but this shouldn’t take too long since the feature is almost ready for insider testing.

Dark modes are among the features that users love the most, not only on desktops, but also on mobile devices, especially because they make everything easier on the eye in low light conditions.

Windows 10 itself comes with a dark mode, but the upcoming May 2019 Update will also bring a brand-new light theme that will make the desktop overall feel more modern and fresh on a PC.
