The Paint 3D option in the context menu is going away

Not a long time ago, Microsoft announced that it would no longer pre-install Paint 3D on Windows 10, moving the app to the Microsoft Store.

For many users, this is a decision that just makes sense, especially because Paint 3D has never reached the popularity of its classic brother, the original Paint app, which is still used by plenty of people out there for quick edits to their photos.

Getting rid of Paint 3D is still possible these days, but on the other hand, even if you do this, the context menu entry that is supposed to let you edit photos with this app is still there. In other words, you can remove the app but can’t remove the context menu entry.

If Paint 3D is already gone and you right-click an image and click the “Edit with Paint 3D” option, Windows 10 automatically point you to the Microsoft Store to install the app.

Big change on the radar

But as discovered recently by WL, Microsoft has already confirmed it’s working on this, and the latest Windows 10 preview build removes the context menu entry when Paint 3D is gone. The change should go live for all devices running Windows 10 in the next feature update for the OS.

There’s a chance the next feature update also becomes the first one to no longer preinstall Paint 3D automatically, though Microsoft could wait until the fall update for the whole thing.

“3D Viewer and Paint 3D will no longer be preinstalled on clean installs of the latest Insider Preview builds. Both apps will still be available in the Store and will stay on your device after an OS update. So, if you upgraded your PC like normal, you shouldn’t see these apps changed in your app list,” the company said not a long time ago.

The next Windows 10 feature update is version 21H1 and is projected to land in April or May.
