Company teases big Office announcement for this week

Microsoft could roll out a dark mode for Office mobile apps as soon as this week, judging from a series of teasers released by company officials lately.

While none of these teasers specifically points to a dark theme coming to Office apps for Android and iOS, this is what the tweets posted by various Microsoft employees seem to suggest.

“One switch can change everything,” Michael Palermiti, Head of Product Outlook for iOS, said in a tweet that the since removed.

In a follow-up tweet, Palermiti suggests that whatever Office update Microsoft is working on, it’ll land on both Android and iOS at the same time.

An announcement could go live as soon as today, albeit the rollout could take place in stages and thus make its way to devices in the coming weeks.

Full speed on dark theme development

A dark mode for Office mobile apps certainly makes sense, especially because Microsoft has already released this visual makeover for its productivity suite on other platforms. Microsoft Office has a dark mode on both Windows and macOS, and an update that the software giant released for OneNote earlier this year allows the UWP app to align with the visual settings in Windows as well.

Given all of these, a dark theme for Office on Android and iOS comes in line with all those improvements on other platforms, and it’s something that many users have been asking for in the last months. At the same time, considering all the dark theme efforts that both Google and Apple have been doing for their mobile platforms, such an update would only allow Office blend in more seamlessly.

It remains to be seen if this anticipated announcement indeed concerns a dark theme for Office apps, so we’ll be keeping an eye on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store to let you know if and when the updated apps go live.
