Software giant following in the footsteps of Google

Microsoft has recently announced that it’s suspending the release of major updates for Microsoft Edge browser, in an attempt to avoid running into issues, which would in turn require a rapid response from developers.

With the entire world staying home and working remotely, software companies are now trying to make developers’ lives easier by not releasing major updates which could potentially require a fast reaction should any compatibility issues occur.

Microsoft says it’s pausing the release of updates for the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, but only for the stable channel. In other words, if you’re on Canary, Dev, or Beta builds, you should receive updates normally. At the same time, security updates will continue to be released to the stable channel at the standard pace.

“In light of the current circumstances, the Edge team will pause updating the Stable channel to Edge 81 consistent with the Chromium Project. We are committed to continued security and stability updates to Edge 80. We’ll have more to share on this next week,” the Microsoft Edge developing team announced a few hours ago.

Google Chrome updates

Google has recently made a similar decision, announcing that major updates for Google Chrome would no longer be pushed to the browser for the very same reason.

“Due to adjusted work schedules, we’re pausing upcoming Chrome & Chrome OS releases. Our goal is to ensure they continue to be stable, secure, & reliable for anyone who depends on them. We’ll prioritize updates related to security, which will be included in Chrome 80. Stay tuned,” Google said.

“During this time, we will not promote Chrome 81 from beta to stable. We plan to begin shipping Dev channels again in the near future, and will continue shipping Canaries as planned.”

Neither Microsoft nor Google said when the normal release schedule would be restored, but for now, both companies are keeping an eye on the coronavirus outbreak and adjust their plans accordingly.
