Early information on the next Surface Pro model emerges

Microsoft will take the wraps off new Surface upgrades (and possibly new models) on October 2 in New York, and one of the devices expected to receive some time during the event is the Surface Pro.

People familiar with the matter claim the Surface Pro 7 will see daylight on October 2 before going on sale several weeks later.

As I told you in my Surface pre-show analysis, most of the improvements on the Surface Pro 7 will take place under the hood, as the device will feature latest-generation hardware.

And according to a report from WindowsArea, this is indeed the case, as the Surface Pro 7 will use Intel’s 10th generation CPUs. I expect a RAM upgrade as well, albeit the exact specifics aren’t available at this point.

USB-C on the Surface Pro

The German site also claims that Microsoft wants to release a Surface Pro 7 version with a Snapdragon 8cx processor, most likely powered by Windows 10 ARM. The focus here will be put on extended battery life and LTE connectivity, albeit it’s likely that all models will support LTE, according to the same report.

The Surface Pro 7 will also get USB-C, but Microsoft doesn’t want to get rid of Surface Connect for the time being. The company is willing to stick with a transition period for now, so Surface Connect is more likely to be removed when the next model comes out.

On the other hand, the USB-C port will take the place of the display port, with Surface Connect to continue using PCIe.

The Surface Pro 7 will almost certainly come with an upgraded Touch Cover, possibly with improved key travel and touchpad. Again, specifics are missing for now, but I expect more information to make the rounds in the coming weeks as we approach the October event.
