It’s impossible to repair the Laptop, iFixit says

Microsoft’s recently launched Surface Laptop is the most recent device that iFixit attempted to break into pieces, and this time, we’re literally using the term “attempted.”

And it’s all because it’s nearly impossible to tear down the Surface Laptop without causing damages to the internal components, as iFixit discovered the hard way.

And it all starts with the rubber footpads, which instead of screws cover metal feet, which means that in order to break the device open, you need to peel the Alcantara fabric.

Once inside, reaching the main components is nearly impossible at first glance because every little part is covered by another part or a cover that holds them in place.

The battery cannot be replaced

For example, the trackpad is placed under tape and a metal shield, while the battery is even harder to reach because the majority of other components need to be removed as well, including speakers. It took nearly 10 steps to reach the battery, which comes in the form of a 45.2 Wh unit, “roughly the same capacity as the latest Surface Pro (45 Wh), and more than both iPad Pro 10.5" (31 wh) and latest MacBook Retina 41 Wh),” as iFixit explains.

“The Surface Laptop is not a laptop. It’s a glue-filled monstrosity. There is nothing about it that is upgradable or long-lasting, and it literally can’t be opened without destroying it. (Show us the procedure, Microsoft, we’d love to be wrong.)” iFixit explains.

The device got a 0 repairability score because of obvious reasons, and the iFixit engineers explain that the laptop was not created to be opened or repaired without damaging other parts. The CPU, RAM, and storage are soldered to the motherboard, so you won’t be able to upgrade the laptop, while the headphone jack itself requires removing lots of parts to reach.

And last but not least, the battery is super-difficult to replace, which in the end gives the device a limited lifespan, as the batteries get worn out quite often.
