Microsoft has recently announced the Surface Duo 2, therefore refreshing its Android device lineup with a new model sporting a series of welcome upgrades, including a new camera and a true high-end processor under the hood.

And while it’s pretty clear the Redmond-based software giant has tried to make the Surface Duo 2 a top-notch product from a hardware perspective, many were wondering how the company wants to treat its new device as far as software is concerned.

And according to a recent report, there’s no difference in terms of update policy in this regard, as the Surface Duo 2 will receive three major versions of Android, just like the original Surface Duo.

The big question is how fast Microsoft actually plans to release these updates.

Surface Duo still on Android 10

Because right now, the Surface Duo is still running Android 10, at a time when Google is getting ready to ship Android 12. This means Microsoft’s high-end dual-screen device is running a super-old Android version, and despite being scheduled to receive Android 11 at one point, it’s still running the operating system it came with at launch.

The Surface Duo 2, on the other hand, launches with Android 11, even though Android 12 is just around the corner.

So what this means is the Surface Duo 2 is scheduled to receive Android 12 in the coming months, but unless Microsoft accelerates this pace, it could take up to a year for the whole thing to happen.

Hopefully, Microsoft ships the Android 12 update to the Duo 2 much sooner, especially because the device is available for many more buyers than its predecessor, so the company needs to up its ante from a software perspective as well, especially as the upgraded device is now a high-end model in all regards.
