Microsoft is expected to take the wraps off the second-generation Surface Duo later this year, and the first photos showing the device made their way to the web this week.

Very little has been said about the Surface Duo 2, but on the other hand, the photos that reached the web do reveal some welcome upgrades that Microsoft is at least considering.

For example, these pictures confirm that the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 comes with a triple-camera configuration, which means the new device should be able to take better photos overall. The three-camera setup most likely includes the primary sensor, a telephoto unit, and an ultra-wide sensor.

Latest-generation hardware

As compared to the original Surface Duo, the second-generation model is likely to come with the latest hardware, including a new Qualcomm chip that would also allow for 5G support.

Microsoft wants to address all the shortcomings of the first Surface Duo, and going for the latest-gen hardware is one way to do this. The original model, for example, launched with a previous-generation processor, so for many people, it could hardly be considered a flagship.

Judging from these photos, Microsoft will retain the overall look of the Surface Duo on its successor as well, so the same dual-screen setup will also be used. Most likely, the hinge will be improved as well, though this is hard to figure just by checking out the leaked photos.

While Microsoft has remained completely tight-lipped on everything related to the Surface Duo 2, there’s a chance the device would be announced in October or November, as per the typical hardware event calendar used by the software giant.

It remains to be seen if Microsoft is aiming for an international launch from the very beginning or the device would initially become available in the United States exclusively just like the first model.
