Edge browser wins another battery life test in Windows 10

It’s no secret that Microsoft has been pushing very hard for Microsoft Edge to become the preferred choice for users on Windows 10, and ads showing just how advanced its browser is compared to third-party alternatives are part of this strategy.

Earlier this week, the company published a new 30-second video on YouTube to highlight that Microsoft Edge is more battery friendly than Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, saving power when running simple tasks like watching a video.

What the company did was run its very own benchmark to compare battery performance of Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox when playing an HD video in a loop. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft Edge wins the test, and the company says that its browser can last 98% longer than Mozilla Firefox and 14% longer than Google Chrome.

The benchmark is performed on Surface models running on Windows 10 April 2018 Update, and thus the software giant claims that its browser is the best choice for laptops updated to the most recent version of the operating system.

Google Chrome, top choice worldwide

But despite the rather aggressive marketing campaign that Microsoft launched for Edge browser, Google Chrome continues to be the preferred choice for users across the world.

Google’s browser was running on 61.69% of the desktop computers across the world last month, according to data offered by NetMarketShare, while Firefox was pretty far behind with just 10.17%. Additionally, Microsoft Edge lagged behind its rivals with a share of only 4.45%.

Microsoft Edge replaces Internet Explorer as the default browser in Windows 10, and it comes with several modern features, including support for extensions. And while the app itself is evolving, it does it at a rather slower pace as compared to its competitors, as Microsoft only ships updates for the browser with new Windows 10 versions, and not more frequently, as it’s the case of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
