Microsoft Teams adoption skyrockets due to social distancing

Nearly the entire world is working from home these days due to the new coronavirus outbreak, and this means that solutions like Microsoft Teams that facilitate working remotely are recording a huge boost in usage.

Microsoft itself has confirmed that the COVID-19 has generated an important increase in the number of users connected to its platform, and apparently, this growth has been so substantial that Microsoft Teams even struggled to stay online earlier this week.

Microsoft says it already exceeded 32 million daily active users, which is up from no less than 20 million users in November. And in updated statistics provided to VB, the software giant explained that the figure increased to 44 million users this week, as more workers in Europe connect to Microsoft Teams.

This means the new coronavirus has helped more than double the number of users on Microsoft Teams, and the figure is likely to grow even further as the infection keeps expanding across the continent.

“Our customers have certainly turned to Teams during this challenging time, and we’ve seen usage spikes in markets most impacted by COVID-19,” Jared Spataro, Microsoft 365 corporate vice president, was quoted as saying by the cited source a few days ago. “We measured 32 million DAU on March 11, before we began to see the full impact that COVID-19 is having on usage.”

Huge boost this week

This week, however, the number continued to grow to set a new record.

“The last seven days, however, have shown the sheer unprecedented nature of the global demand we’re seeing now for solutions that enable remote work and learning across chat, video, and file collaboration, which Teams provides in a single platform. As previously shared, as of March 11, 2020 we counted 32 million daily users of Teams, which was mostly in line with our growth trajectory and projections. As of March 18, 2020, that number has grown by 12 million to 44 million daily users around the world,” Microsoft said.

At this point, the number of people infected with the new coronavirus exceeded 245,000, with Italy remaining the most affected European country with more than 41,000 confirmed cases.
