14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft has just acknowledged a new bug in Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018 Update), revealing that the Microsoft Edge browser could crash when running older NVIDIA drivers.
The company lists this problem as a known issue for Windows 10 version 1809 cumulative update KB4467708, and says that it was actually discovered by NVIDIA itself.
NVIDIA then reported the bug to Microsoft, and new drivers that were released earlier this week come to resolve it. As a result, users whose systems have already been updated to version 1809 need to get the latest NVIDIA drivers to make sure their experience with the Edge browser isn’t affected.
“nVidia has notified Microsoft of an issue where Microsoft Edge may crash or hang while playing video. This issue occurs following an nVidia driver update,” Microsoft explains.
“nVidia has released an updated driver to address this issue. Please follow the instructions found in nVidia's support article.”
NVIDIA’s new graphics driver is 417.21 and it indeed includes a fix for “Microsoft Edge [which] does not respond after playing back video.”
New Windows 10 version 1809 cumulative updates
Microsoft is projected to release new cumulative updates next week as part of its monthly Patch Tuesday rollout.
This batch of updates will also bring further improvements for Windows 10 version 1809, including fixes for some of the bugs that have already been acknowledged by the company.
Windows 10 October 2018 Update was originally released in early October, but was later pulled due to critical bugs and re-released in November. Despite being retired temporarily, the October update is still far from providing a bug-free experience and, in fact, Microsoft has a lot to fix in the current builds.
Cumulative updates to test a number of fixes have already been pushed to insiders, and Microsoft could finally kick off the public rollout next week.
