Verizon removes Lumia listing from its website

We’ve known for a while that Windows phones have no future, but this doesn’t mean that today’s news isn’t painful for the most loyal fans of Microsoft’s mobile platform.

Verizon has just removed the listing of the last Lumia model from its official website, technically completing the demise of Microsoft’s Windows phones in the United States.

As Neowin notes, the Lumia 735 was the only Lumia phone still available on the website of an official reseller, despite having been listed as out of stock for many months.

At this point, neither Microsoft nor resellers are currently offering Lumia models, and Windows phone diehards need to go for a third-party device if they still want to stick with Windows 10 Mobile. Both the HP Elite X3 and the Alcatel IDOL 4S are currently listed on Microsoft’s website, despite only the latter now in stock.

What’s next for Windows phones?

The answer to this question is as simple as it could: nothing is next for Windows phones, as Microsoft’s mobile platform is approaching its end. Support will continue to be provided until mid-2019, so devices still in use will get security updates for approximately one more year.

While at this point Windows 10 Mobile is currently in maintenance mode, once the end of support is reached, devices would be completely abandoned, and not only that no updates would be released, but developers will also give up on their apps as well.

Developers moving to Android and iOS is already happening right and is a trend that started nearly two years ago after Microsoft failed to transform Windows 10 Mobile into a successful platform. The lack of apps is considered to be one of the reasons this mobile operating system failed, and despite several attempts, Microsoft just couldn’t convince developers to be more committed to its mobile strategy.
