Canonical and Microsoft announced today that PowerShell automation and configuration management system is now available as a Snap package for Ubuntu Linux and other Snap-enabled GNU/Linux distributions.

Consisting of a cross-platform command-line shell and related scripting language, as well as a framework for dealing with cmdlets, Microsoft's PowerShell works on Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms to allow power-users and system administrators to have better and automated control over the administration of several operating systems.

Microsoft has recently packaged PowerShell as a Snap for easy distribution across multiple Linux-based operating systems. Ubuntu and other Linux users can now easily install PowerShell on their operating systems via the Snap universal package format. For more details, you can visit PowerShell's Snap Store page or the GitHub page.

"Snaps are great because they provide a single package format that works across many Linux distributions, much like how PowerShell acts as a single automation platform across operating systems. We hope our users enjoy the simplified installation and update experience of Snaps as much as we do," said Joey Aiello, Program Manager, PowerShell.

Here's how to install PowerShell as a Snap package on Ubuntu

If you want to install Microsoft's PowerShell on your Ubuntu Linux operating system or another GNU/Linux distribution that supports Snaps, such as Arch Linux, Fedora, OpenSuSE, Solus, Gentoo Linux, Debian GNU/Linux, or Linux Mint, all you have to do is to run one of the commands listed below. The first command installs the stable version of PowerShell and the second one PowerShell Preview.

snap install powershell –classic snap install powershell-preview –classic PowerShell Preview is a more experimental version of PowerShell designed for bleeding-edge users who want to try the latest features. Once PowerShell is installed on your Linux OS, you'll immediately receive new versions as soon as they're out upstream thanks to Canonical's Snappy technologies, which offer transactional and automatic updates for all installed Snaps.
