For some reason, Microsoft says this is an essential app

If you’re a new Windows 10 user who’s only now discovering Microsoft’s latest operating system, there’s a good chance that you launch the Windows Store and look in the “top” sections to download apps that help you make the most of the OS and the device.

And for many it might come as a big surprise that Microsoft’s very own Windows DVD Player app is the number one pick in the “top apps” category, even though its rating is quite low and is actually one very controversial application aimed at Windows 10 users.

First and foremost, it’s worth mentioning that Windows DVD Player app, which is developed by Microsoft and costs $15, is listed alongside apps that are really successful, including Adobe Photoshop, Sketchable (which also features Surface Dial support), AutoCAD 360, and Plex.

Then, Windows DVD Player app is a project that was supposed to make the transition to Windows 10 easier for users of Windows Media Center SKUs, as the company has completely removed the Media Center add-on in this latest version of the OS.

Basic capabilities at huge price

Available for $15 in the Store, Windows DVD Player does nothing more than to play DVDs that you insert in your DVD player, having a rather basic interface with playback controls and nothing more.

Since there are so many free apps out there doing a lot more than this, Windows DVD Player has often been criticized, so it’s no wonder that it has an overall rating of just 2.8. There are no less than 165 one-star ratings, but on the other hand, there are also 120 users who rated the app with five stars.

And yet, seeing it in the top apps section is certainly surprising, especially given the small rating and the criticism that it received since it was first launched in the Store.

Of course, there’s no doubt that the Windows DVD Player app could actually come in handy to those looking for nothing more than basic DVD playing capabilities, but VLC is pretty much the best alternative that you can get right now without having to spend a single cent.
