Microsoft Removes Broken Office Updates Due to Download Issue

Office 365 client updates can’t be downloaded, firm says

The Office 365 client updates that Microsoft published on December 10 as part of the monthly Patch Tuesday rollout have been pulled after the company discovered a download issue.

In a December 11 advisory, Microsoft explains that Office 365 ProPlus customers who are trying to download Office 365 client updates through Configuration Manager could be blocked from completing the process. No information has been provided on what’s causing the download error, however.

Microsoft says one of the following three errors are likely to be encountered when downloading the updates:

• Error: Failed to download content id • Error: Invalid certificate signature • Error 0x800b0004: TRUST_E_SUBJECT_NOT_TRUSTED The subject is not trusted for the specified action

According to the linked tech support article, these errors can occur after the installation of Office 365 client updates in any channel beginning with version 1902 (build 11329.x). Previous releases shouldn’t be affected.

Updates no longer offered to Office 365 devices

The error is displayed when Office 365 is updated through the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager or Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager.

The affected updates are the following:  

Office 365 Client Update – Semi-annual Channel Version 1808 for x64 based Edition (Build 10730.20426)

Office 365 Client Update – Semi-annual Channel Version 1902 for x64 based Edition (Build 11328.20492)
Office 365 Client Update – Semi-annual Channel Version 1902 for x86 based Edition (Build 11328.20492)
Office 365 Client Update – Semi-annual Channel (Targeted) Version 1908 for x64 based Edition (Build 11929.20516)
Office 365 Client Update – Semi-annual Channel (Targeted) Version 1908 for x86 based Edition (Build 11929.20516)
Office 365 Client Update – Monthly Channel Version 1911 for x64 based Edition (Build 12228.20364)

  Microsoft says it has already pulled these updates, so they are no longer offered to Office 365 devices. No ETA is available just yet as to when they are supposed to be re-released.
