Microsoft has released a new version of Windows Terminal, and this time there are substantial improvements, including the new Cascadia Code font.

Marked as the September 2019 release, Windows Terminal Preview 1909 comes with Cascadia Code, a font that was specifically developed for command-line utilities like the Terminal. The font is included by default and installs on download.

Additionally, Microsoft’s Windows Terminal now features a settings schema, with the company explaining the following:

“The settings schema will provide auto-fill suggestions when editing your profiles.json file and it will also provide definitions of each property. Reference to this schema is automatically included in this release, so you should see it take effect right away!”

Stable version coming in early 2020

Windows Terminal Preview version 1909 also introduces support for stylus selection, which is not at all surprising given Microsoft’s push for pen support in everything Windows 10. The stylus plays the role of a mouse in the Terminal, so selecting text works just like dragging in a window.

There are also clipboard bug fixes in this release, with Microsoft saying that previous versions crashed when copying content from the app. Everything should work correctly in this version, and the firm says newline characters are respected as well in this build.

Windows Terminal now features close window functionality, so users can close only one window when multiple tabs are open, with a prompt display on the screen for confirmation. Pressing Alt + F4 closes the windows too, but on the other hand, it’s important to know that clicking the close button automatically shuts down the entire app without a warning message.

Microsoft says Windows Terminal 1.0 should be ready as a stable release by the end of 2019, but the public release is targeted for April 2020. The company will use the first months of 2020 for bug fixes and further improvements ahead of the official launch of the Terminal.
