New optional update now available for users

Microsoft has released a new optional cumulative update for Windows 11 users, obviously as a preview of the next major update cycle due in May.

Windows 11 cumulative update KB5012643 therefore needs to be manually updated from Windows Update, with all devices where automatic updates are enabled to get all improvements as part of the next Patch Tuesday release.

The update comes with several notable bug fixes, including for a glitch that caused video subtitles to be partially cut off. At the same time, Microsoft says it has resolved a bug that caused these subtitles to be incorrectly aligned, as well as a glitch that prevented users from using the minimize, maximize, and close buttons in a maximized app window.

More improvements

Microsoft says it has also resolved an error that caused a Blue Screen of Death on some devices during the startup process.

As usual, there are also fixes specifically aimed at enterprises.

“Improves the Autopilot client to process updated Trusted Platform Module (TPM) capabilities that support self-deployment and pre-provisioning scenarios,” Microsoft explains in the changelog.

“Changes the timeout for Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) registration from 60 minutes to 90 minutes for hybrid Azure AD-joined Autopilot scenarios. This also addresses a race condition that causes an exception at timeout. Addresses an issue in which mobile device management (MDM) policies were not allowed on Windows Enterprise editions that were upgraded to Enterprise using Azure AD-joined subscription entitlement.”

There’s no new known issue in this cumulative update, with the only bug currently acknowledged by Microsoft referring to a Backup and Restore glitch introduced by the January updates. Microsoft says it’s still working on a fix and recommends users to switch to third-party backup and recovery apps that are not affected by this problem. No ETA has been provided as to when a full fix could land.
