Microsoft has released two new updates for Windows 10, both of them supposed to prepare the transition to the newly-released April 2018 Update.

Specifically, Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) gets update KB4134661, whereas systems running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709) are provided with update KB4134660. In both cases, what these updates do is enable a notification on computers running any of the two Windows 10 version to prepare the upgrade to Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803).

The description that Microsoft offers for the two updates is rather vague and only says the following:

“This Windows update provides a notification of an improved privacy experience on upgrade to the Windows 10 April 2018 release.”

The two patches are shipped via Windows Update to systems running any of the two aforementioned Windows 10 versions, and at the same time, they are available from the Microsoft Update Catalog using these links – here and here.

The Windows 10 April 2018 Update rollout

Windows 10 April 2018 Update is the latest version of Microsoft’s desktop operating system whose rollout started on April 30 as a manual download. On May 8, Microsoft officially kicked off the automatic release on Windows Update, only that the rollout takes place in stages.

In other words, not all systems are getting the update right now, but on the other hand, these two patches pave the way for the April 2018 Update, probably ensuring a smoother upgrade from Creators Update and Fall Creators Update.

There are no known issues and no reported bugs hitting these two updates, which can only be good news for Windows 10 users, especially given the increasing number of problems reported lately on Windows 10. It remains to be seen if Microsoft provides more information on the two patches, but we have reached out to the company to ask for more details and we’ll update the article if an answer is provided.
