Microsoft has released a new servicing stack update (SSU) for Windows 10 on October 8 as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday rollout.

Servicing stack updates are specifically supposed to improve the reliability of the Windows Update service, and in addition, update KB4521863 also brings additional tweaks for Secure Boot.

Microsoft says the first fix concerns a bug causing the Secure Boot revocation list, also known as DBX, to not be applied when the Secure Boot allow list, or DB, update is empty.

The second improvement concerns the DBX experience as well.

“Improves the Secure Boot revocation list (DBX) update experience to avoid multiple restarts when you deploy the DBX update on a device where the Credential Guard service is not running,” Microsoft says.

What you need to know is that the latest servicing stack update is required to install the newest Windows 10 cumulative updates. Published on October 8 as well, these cumulative updates come with critical security fixes, so keeping the device up-to-date is strongly recommended.

If you use your device with automatic updates turned on in Windows Update, the latest servicing stack update should already be there on your device, as it’s automatically pushed to all computers before the new cumulative updates. Additionally, KB4521863 is also offered on the Microsoft Update Catalog and on the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Judging from the existing reports so far, the latest cumulative updates have all installed correctly, with only one issue said to be hitting Windows 10 devices. The Start menu is still broken down after installing these updates, but this is an issue that’s been reported previously after installing the September updates as well.
