Microsoft has released another preview build of Windows 10 October 2018 Update (internally codenamed Redstone 5) to insiders in the Fast ring.

Windows 10 build 17758 isn’t the final RTM build of the upcoming feature update, but on the other hand, it gets us closer to it, as Microsoft is expected to sign-off the final version sometime soon.

Build 17758 doesn’t obviously come with any new features, and the full focus is on fixing bugs and improving the performance of the operating system ahead of the public launch.

The official changelog of this build points to some updates to Storage Sense, but these refinements have been around for a while and are expected to be part of the October 2018 Update anyway – you can read the full release notes in the box after the jump.

What’s new in this build?

New Windows 10 October 2018 Update preview build fixes several crashes, including the ones occurring when trying to save a file from specific apps.

Furthermore, starting with this build, clicking on the import photos and videos option from an autoplay notification should no longer crash explorer.exe, a bug that has been extremely frustrating in the previous builds and which likely impacted a significant number of systems.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update is expected to be finalized in the coming days, while insiders may get the RTM build before the end of the month.

In the meantime, Microsoft will continue its work on refining the performance of the update, shipping several fixes to this build ahead of the public launch.

The rollout should take place in stages and kick off in the first half of October. Given the continued work on fixes and other improvements, Windows 10 October 2018 Update could come with a day one patch that would provide the operating system with the latest tweaks that Microsoft makes as part of the insider program.
