New cumulative updates published on Patch Tuesday

Microsoft has released a new batch of cumulative updates for Windows 10 as part of the January 2020 Patch Tuesday cycle.

All Windows 10 versions are getting cumulative updates this month, and worth knowing is that Windows 10 version 1903 and 1909 are being provided with the same release – this is because they share most of the code, so there’s no need for providing different updates.

The following updates are now available for Windows 10 devices:

Windows 10 version 1507: KB4534306 (OS Build 10240.18453) Windows 10 Version 1607: KB4534271 (OS Build 14393.3443) Windows 10 Version 1703: KB4534296 (OS Build 15063.2254) Windows 10 Version 1709: KB4534276 (OS Build 16299.1625) Windows 10 version 1803: KB4534293 (OS Build 17134.1246) Windows 10 version 1809: KB4534273 (OS Build 17763.973) Windows 10, version 1903 and 1909: KB4528760 (OS Builds 18362.592 and 18363.592)

Security focus

This month, the focus is mostly on security improvements, so there are only minor non-security improvements included in these cumulative updates.

For example, cumulative update KB4528760 comes with security fixes for the Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Cryptography, Windows Storage and Filesystems, and the Microsoft Scripting Engine. Additionally, it includes smaller tweaks to improve security when storing and managing files or when using input devices such as a mouse, keyboard, or stylus.

Cumulative update KB4534273 features the same security patches, but also resolves an issue to support the new SameSite cookie policies by default for Google Chrome 80.

All in all, it’s pretty clear that the focus this month was on fixing security issues in Windows 10, and this means that users are recommended to patch their devices as soon as possible.

At the time of writing, there are no known widespread issues, other than the ones that Microsoft has already acknowledged on the official KB pages linked above.
