New update now available for Release Preview insiders

Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for Windows 10, but this time the company’s target isn’t the production version of the operating system.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4476976 is now available for download for devices running preview builds as part of the Release Preview ring, and it increases the OS build number to 17763.288.

What’s very important to note is that Release Preview insiders are still on Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809), so this cumulative update could actually be an early version of a later release that may become available to everyone in mid-January.

Windows 10 version 1809 was originally released on October 2, but a few days later, Microsoft pulled it completely after discovering a bug potentially leading to the removal of user files. The software giant then re-released the update to users in the Slow and Release Preview rings for further testing.

In the meantime, Microsoft used the two rings to test cumulative updates before they are publicly released to all users, so there’s a chance this is the case today too.

There are no specifics as to what’s changed in cumulative update KB4476976, as Microsoft hasn’t published a changelog just yet, but we expect more information to make the rounds once the public rollout begins.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update received another cumulative update earlier this week as part of Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday cycle, and the company promised further fixes later in January. Most likely, KB4476976 is a preview of the fixes that will become available soon for everyone.

As always, Release Preview ring users are recommended to install this cumulative update on their devices and send feedback to Microsoft. Given the number of reports on botched cumulative updates in the last 12 months or so, it’s critical for insiders to thorough test new releases and prevent any possible issue from becoming widespread.
