New monthly rollups published on Patch Tuesday

In addition to Windows 10 cumulative updates, the December 2019 Patch Tuesday rollout also brought new monthly rollups for Windows 7 and 8.1, along with the typical security-only updates that are published every month.

Worth noting is that this is the second-last monthly rollup for Windows 7, as the 2009 operating system is projected to reach the end of support next month. The last batch of improvements for Windows 7 will go live on January 14.

Windows 7

As it happens every month, Windows 7 is getting both a rollup and a security-only update that includes only security fixes exclusively.

For December 2019, the Windows 7 monthly rollup is KB4530734, while the security-only update is KB4530692.

The official changelog doesn’t point to anything else than security refinements for Windows components, such as Windows Input and Composition, Windows Virtualization, Windows Kernel, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows Server.

The good news is that there’s no known issue in these updates, so at least theoretically, everything should complete flawlessly when installing the new monthly rollup or the security-only update.

Windows 8.1

When it comes to Windows 8.1, the monthly rollup is KB4530702, and it’s offered alongside security-only update KB4530730.

The release notes also point to security improvements exclusively, such as updates to Windows Virtualization, Windows Kernel, Windows Peripherals, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows Server.

There’s just one known issue this time, but it’s actually a problem that Microsoft has acknowledged in previous monthly rollups as well.

“Certain operations, such as rename, that you perform on files or folders that are on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) may fail with the error, “STATUS_BAD_IMPERSONATION_LEVEL (0xC00000A5)”. This occurs when you perform the operation on a CSV owner node from a process that doesn’t have administrator privilege.”

The updates are available right now from Windows Update. There are no reports of failed installs or any post-installation issues.
