Microsoft has published another Microsoft Edge Dev build, and this is quite a notable release as this particular testing channel has reached version 92.

The new Microsoft Edge Dev build that users can download is 92.0.873.1, so it’s the very first build of version 92.

Needless to say, Microsoft Edge Dev 92 doesn’t come with major improvements at this point, as the update only enables support for some new management policies in the browser and includes a bunch of other fixes here and there to improve the reliability of the app.

Windows Task Manager improvements

But on the other hand, Microsoft is also announcing a series of improvements for the Windows Task Manager, therefore making Edge processes easier to understand as far as the resource usage is concerned.

More specifically, the Windows Task Manager will now separately display the browser, GPU, and crashpad processes, utilities and extensions, InPrivate tabs, and subframes.

“Each line under Microsoft Edge in Windows Task Manager is NOT ALWAYS a separate process. Some processes contain multiple items and will be represented by multiple lines in Windows Task Manager. There are multiple ways to distinguish which items are in their own process and which items share a process,” the company explains.

Microsoft also explains that ending tasks will generate a different behavior depending on the item that you’re killing in the Task Manager.

For example, when terminating the browser process, everything related to Microsoft Edge closes, while when shutting down the GPU and utility processes, these will restart causing a small change to the Edge window. Processes will also close when ending the renderer processes.

“If the process contains tabs, all the tabs in the process will be replaced with an error page saying, “This page is having a problem.” If the process contains subframes, the visible subframes will be replaced with a crashed tab icon. For invisible subframes, you likely won’t see a difference, but the page may be affected in some way,” Microsoft notes.
