Microsoft has released new firmware updates for the majority of Surface models out there in anticipation of the debut of Windows 10 May 2019 Update.

The next feature update for Windows 10, officially called May 2019 Update, or version 1903, is projected to land later this month. The release will take place in stages, but Microsoft’s Surface devices are likely to be among the first to get it.

Today’s rollout includes the Surface Studio, the Surface Laptop, the Surface Pro 6, and several other models. You can check out the full changelogs in the box at the end of the article.

Most updates include tweaks in several areas, like the camera, which is now supposed to offer better performance. Additionally, there are system security improvements, as well as other updates supposed to increase the stability of Surface models.

Further Windows 10 May 2019 Update improvements for drivers

Surface Pro 6 also come with a new driver for the card reader, as per the official changelog.

“Realtek USB 3.0 Card Reader – Universal Serial Bus controllers 10.0.17763.31246 – improves battery life while using SD card during Connected Standby.”

One of the issues in the upcoming May 2019 Update concerned USB card readers, with Microsoft claiming that the new Windows 10 feature update could be blocked on devices with incompatible devices. It’s not yet clear if this new driver also resolves this problem or not.

As it happens every month, users can download the new firmware updates from Windows Update, and they are recommended to fully charge their devices or keep them plugged in until the process comes to an end. A firmware update that fails could brick the device completely, so it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
