Microsoft has released an out-of-band update for Windows 10 devices, with the company explaining that the purpose of KB5020953 is to resolve a bug in OneDrive.

Hitting all supported versions of Windows 10, the glitch made it impossible to launch OneDrive. It was introduced by a previous cumulative update and affected both OneDrive and OneDrive for Business.

The following errors might be encountered on devices where the bug exists:

  • Sign out or unlink your account in the Microsoft OneDrive sync app.
  • Unlink sites or folders from syncing to your device from Microsoft SharePoint or Microsoft Teams sites.
  • Uninstalling the OneDrive sync app might fail.

The new update is KB5020953, and according to the software giant, it resolves the OneDrive bug, bringing everything back to normal.

Worth knowing, however, is that the patch isn’t shipped as an automatic update via Windows Update, as it needs to be downloaded and installed manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

“This issue was resolved in the out-of-band update KB5020953. It is a cumulative update, so you do not need to apply any previous update before installing it. To get the standalone package for KB5020953, search for it in the Microsoft Update Catalog. You can manually import these updates into Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager. For WSUS instructions, see WSUS and the Catalog Site. For Configuration Manager instructions, see Import updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Note KB5020953 is not available from Windows Update and will not install automatically,” the software giant explained.

If you want to download the update right now, you can find it on the Windows Update Catalog on this page. The fix will also be included in the next batch of cumulative updates that will go live for Windows 10 devices as part of the November 2022 Patch Tuesday cycle.
