Microsoft is working on making Windows 10 a more modern operating system in all regards, and as many of us know already, one of the parts that have until now been rather ignored is the system icon pack offered by default.

Microsoft is now trying to take care of the whole thing, and the latest build for Windows insiders introduces a new system icons pack, thus providing users with a more modern touch overall.

Based on the Fluent Design style, which Microsoft has used to overhaul Windows 10 as a whole, the new system icons come alongside a new font.

“Sharped-eyed Windows Insiders will notice many of the system icons in this build have been updated and now align to the Microsoft Fluent Design style. This build includes a new font Segoe Fluent Icons. Areas of the OS that use the Segoe MDL2 assets such as the Start menu and Settings app will include the new icon designs which have a more rounded and simplified look and feel,” Microsoft explains.

Most likely coming to users with Windows 10 version 21H2

So when exactly is this new pack of icons supposed to go live for all users out there? Nobody knows for sure, as the improvements that Microsoft is now testing as part of the Insider program no longer have an ETA.

But on the other hand, everybody expects the bigger changes to be part of the upcoming Windows 10 version 21H2 due in the second half of the year.

The next important release for Windows 10 is the 21H1 feature update, but this one has already been confirmed to be just a minor pack of improvements with the focus on under the hood refinements. The next big release is thus due in the fall, most likely in October or November.
