Windows 10X is still MIA but Microsoft is still working around the clock on getting everything ready for the new operating system.

And part of this major effort of turning Windows 10X into a big hit from day one is making sure that users are provided with the full app arsenal they’d need to perform the typical actions on a single- or dual-screen device.

Earlier this week, Microsoft has silently published Windows 10X installers of the new Chromium-powered Microsoft Edge browser, and these seem to be available through all testing channels, namely Canary, Developer, and Beta.

Windows 10X coming early next year

Microsoft announced Windows 10X with much fanfare in the fall of 2019 as the operating system supposed to power the company’s new dual-screen push.

But since Surface Neo, Microsoft’s pioneering device for this new form factor, has been delayed, the Windows 10X plans have also been reconsidered, so now the OS is projected to launch next year with support for single-screen devices first, while the dual-screen support would be added at a later time, most likely in 2021. This is also the year when the Surface Neo is now expected to go live.

“With Windows 10X, we designed for flexibility, and that flexibility has enabled us to pivot our focus toward single-screen Windows 10X devices that leverage the power of the cloud to help our customers work, learn and play in new ways. These single-screen devices will be the first expression of Windows 10X that we deliver to our customers, and we will continue to look for the right moment, in conjunction with our OEM partners, to bring dual-screen devices to market,” Microsoft’s Panos Panay, Chief Product Office, Windows + Devices, said earlier this year.

People close to the matter said Windows 10X is scheduled to go live in the spring, with major updates to go live every year based on a similar schedule.
