Canary version of the browser promoted to Chromium 79

Microsoft has officially released the very first build of Microsoft Edge browser running on Chromium 69 as part of the Canary development channel.

With the latest update, Microsoft Edge Canary reaches version 79.0.278.0 on Windows and macOS, thus becoming the first build that makes the switch to Chromium 69.

While this is a notable release since Microsoft promotes its browser to the latest version of the Chromium engine, it comes without a changelog, as this is the typical approach for Canary builds.

Microsoft Edge Canary is updated on a daily basis, and most releases ship without a changelog. Microsoft, however, does provide a changelog when new Dev builds are released. Microsoft Edge is updated weekly, so I expect the next build shipping next week to be based on Chromium 69 as well and provide us with a closer look of what’s changed.

The latest Microsoft Edge Dev version is 78.0.276.2, and it was released earlier this week with dark theme improvements and further refinements for the new Collections feature.

Edge stable in early 2020?

Most likely, Microsoft will update the next beta build of Microsoft Edge, which is currently available for Windows 10, to Chromium 78, as the current version still runs on Chromium 77. The beta build typically receives updates every six weeks.

Microsoft hasn’t yet said anything about the release date for the stable build of Microsoft Edge. Information that made the rounds earlier this year, however, suggested that the Chromium-based Edge would become the new default in Windows 10 20H1, which is scheduled to launch in the spring of 2020.

Windows 10 20H1 is currently available for users enrolled in the Fast ring of the Windows Insider program, but for the time being, it comes with the original version of Microsoft Edge as the default browser.
