Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 May 2019 Update, or version 1903, which is projected to roll out to production devices beginning later this month.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4497936 is available for Windows Insides in the Slow and Release Preview ring, and Microsoft says that Fast ring insiders, who are already running 20H1 preview builds, are getting it too. However, you must be running Windows 10 build 18356.30 or later.

After installing update KB4497936, the OS build number is increased to 18362.113.

There are three changes in this cumulative update, and one of them is a fix for the new Intel speculative execution side-channel vulnerabilities discovered recently. Microsoft explains the following:

“Provides protections against a new subclass of speculative execution side-channel vulnerabilities, known as Microarchitectural Data Sampling, for 64-Bit (x64) versions of Windows (CVE-2019-11091, CVE-2018-12126, CVE-2018-12127, CVE-2018-12130). Use the registry settings as described in the Windows Client and Windows Server articles. (These registry settings are enabled by default for Windows Client OS editions and Windows Server OS editions).”

Public rollout just around the corner

Additionally, Microsoft says this update resolves a bug that affected Internet Explorer’s performance, as well as a bug that broke down text, layout, and cell size in Microsoft Excel when certain fonts were used.

The software giant lists just one known issue on the KB page, warning that after installing this cumulative update, launching Windows Defender Application Guard or Windows Sandbox might fail with error 0x800705b4. The workaround comes down to creating a dedicated registry key, with instructions available here. A full fix is also in the works and should go live in an upcoming release.

Windows 10 May 2019 Update is already in the RTM stage, and it is projected to go live for devices starting later this month. Insiders in the Slow and Release Preview ring are already testing the final build of the May update.
