Microsoft has shipped Windows 10 April 2018 Update (also known as Redstone 4), and now the company is getting ready to switch the full focus to the very next update for its desktop operating system, called Redstone 5.

Projected to be finalized in the fall, Redstone 5 is already in preview stage thanks to Insider builds previously published for users enrolled in the Skip Ahead ring.

The company is now preparing the very first builds for the Fast and Slow rings as well, and in a short tweet today, Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, recommends users to switch to the Release Preview ring unless they want to get early versions of RS5.

“#WindowsInsiders: if you don't want to start receiving RS5 builds, you should switch to Release Preview TODAY. Both WIP Fast and Slow will see RS5 builds.... why, yes, SOON (tm),” she tweeted.

Windows 10 Redstone 4 rollout beginning next week

The first builds won’t bring too many changes over Redstone 4, and this perfectly makes sense given that Microsoft is only now beginning work on this new OS update, but new features and more substantial improvements are expected to make it to insiders as development advances.

According to Microsoft’s release schedule, Windows 10 Redstone 5 is projected to be finalized in September and shipped to users who aren’t part of the Windows Insider program in October.

In the meantime, Microsoft is getting ready to begin the automatic rollout of Windows 10 April 2018 Update via Windows Update on May 8, after previously releasing the new OS version as a manual download on April 30.

A cumulative update with fixes and security patches is also expected to land next week on Patch Tuesday, the same day when Microsoft begins the rollout to the first wave of systems on Windows Update.
