Microsoft has released a new iteration of update KB4023057 for all Windows 10 versions prior to 1809 (October 2018 Update).

This particular update is specifically supposed to improve update reliability to the latest version of Windows 10, which at this point is still the October Update. Most likely, the same update will be refreshed again in the future when Microsoft begins the public rollout of the May 2019 Update.

Technically, what this update does is check if your system is ready for the upgrade to the latest stable version of Windows 10.

Preparing the device for the upgrade

It also takes a series of steps to prepare the upgrade, such as freeing up disk space should it be needed for the download of installation files.

“This update includes reliability improvements to Windows Update Service components in consumer Windows 10, versions 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, and 1803. It may take steps to free up disk space on your device if you do not have enough disk space to install Windows updates,” Microsoft explains.

“This update includes files and resources that address issues that affect the update processes in Windows 10 that may prevent important Windows updates from being installed. These improvements help make sure that updates are installed seamlessly on your device, and they help improve the reliability and security of devices that are running Windows 10.”

KB4023057 is only offered to consumer builds of Windows 10 and is shipped via Windows Update. It can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog, but if update services are turned on, it’s automatically installed from Windows Update.

The next version of Windows 10 is called May 2019 Update and it’s projected to begin shipping next month.
